Adhesives, Glues, and Pastes
Rice Starch Glue
For wood and paper. Acid-free. Not waterproof - can be reactivated with water when dried out.
Good for gluing cover wraps on book boards, and hardcover on end papers of book block. High water content - avoid using on thinner papers.
Keeps in the fridge for a week. Do not freeze.
Possible preservatives: borax, salt, clove oil
From glutinous rice grains
- Cook with small amount of water (3/4 of rice) first. Proceed to #Cooked glutinous rice.
- Puree with water in a blender. Heat and cook while stirring to desired consistency. Let cool. Store in refrigerator.
From cooked glutinous rice
- Mash cooked rice into a smooth paste. Add more water to thin.
- Return to heat and cook to desired consistency. Let cool.
- Scoop to a fine metal sieve and press through into container. Refrigerate until needed.
From glutinous rice flour
Heat and cook while stirring to desired consistency. Let cool. Store in refrigerator.
Starch Paste
- 1 part wheat/rice starch OR wheat flour
- 4 parts water
- Few drops clove oil.
- Mix water and starch. Let sit for 30 minutes.
- Cook solution in gentle heat (in a double boiler) until it thickens.
- Add clove oil. Stir 10 minutes. Turn off heat. Stir for 10 minutes.
- Transfer to sterilized container. Let cool.
Wheat Flour Paste
For bookbinding, paper, and leather.
- 1 heaped tsp. flour
- 250 mL water
- Mix and heat, stirring constantly to dissolve and avoid lumps. Thicken as desired.
Cornstarch Paste
For bookbinding.
- 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
- Water
- Mix cornstarch with 1 Tbsp. water until smooth.
- Add boiling water to mixture. Stir to incorporate.
- Cool. Store in the refrigerator.
Glue for wood, fabric, papers, cardboard, etc.
- 300g (2 c. + 1 Tbsp.) sugar
- 190g (1.5 c.) white flour
- 3 Tbsp. vinegar OR lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp. baking soda
- 1L (~4.25 c.) water at room temperature.
- (Opt.) 1 Tbsp. Listerine
- Mix flour in water. Stir while heating. DO NOT STOP STIRRING.
- Add sugar once warm. Continue stirring.
- Once dissolved, add vinegar. Stir.
- Add baking soda. Continue stirring.
- Once thickness is achieved, removed from heat. Let cool. Store.
Milk Glue / Casein Glue
Casein glue.
Good for leather/rawhide-wood gluing.
- 1 Tbsp. (15mL) baking soda / other base
- 3 tsp. + (5mL) white vinegar
- 1.5 c. milk
- Warm up milk. Add vinegar. Stir until curds separate. (cottage cheese)
- Let cool. Drain off liquid.
- Slowly add baking soda to the curds while heating to boil until it changes into a creamy mixture. Add water as desired. (Add pigments at this step to make paint)
